Not just a Golf Coach
A major part of what I do with my Private Coaching students does indeed have components of Mentoring built in. I have always felt that is was important to create a great relationship with my students both on and off the golf course. Building trust is a key component in any relationship and that includes with a teacher or coach and their students. One of the cool things about golf is that you can learn a great deal about someone in how they act on the golf course. On the flip side, golf can teach those that play it so much about themselves and perhaps, even help them improve certain aspects of their lives.
“A mentor is someone who sees more talent and ability within you, than you see in yourself, and helps bring it out of you.”
Whether its directly related to golf, and my dealings with a student as their coach, or, if a student and their family choose to retain me for additional mentoring services, there are certain key areas that I tend to focus in on.
“Show me a successful individual and I’ll show you someone who had real positive influences in his or her life. I don’t care what you do for a living—if you do it well I’m sure there was someone cheering you on or showing the way. A mentor.”
~ Denzel Washington
Areas of focus include but are not limited to…
Why do I care? That’s easy…because others cared for me and wanted to see me succeed. Not just during my influential years as a teenager, but also into adulthood and as I was getting my PGA career going. When you have those influences on you yourself, as you are coming up, it is much easier to have the desire to do the same when you have that opportunity. That is where I am at now in my life…wanting to see others, particularly young people, be successful long term.
I still have mentors today myself…the need for having those guiding lights in your life never goes away…we all need a little help sometimes. I still deal with things like anxiety, self doubt, and other normal struggles that all of us have occasionally. Having someone to turn to, that is not just a friend, but rather, an unbiased, thoughtful and brutally honest when needed, mentor, is critical for anyone’s success.
The purpose of mentoring is to connect an individual who has a lot of knowledge and experience with someone who hasn’t gained the same knowledge or experience.
By having someone who knows more than yourself share advice, offer guidance and be a sounding board for your thoughts you stand to benefit from experience beyond your own. Whether in your career or life, having a mentor is crucial to all of our continued growth and development.
